Inspired by @idonotbitemythumbatyou​‘s charming fic, Transcripts (title shortened for brevity) wherein Vanessa is an AI model that Hermann has created and raised. I think it’s just such a wonderfully sweet idea, and it’s been on my mind.

So here is a fansong from Vanessa’s point of view. She might be artificial, but it’s clear even to her how Hermann and Newt feel for each other, and of course she wants her creator to be happy. ❤

I tried to do the glados-style voice from the movie, but idk if it comes across well heh. Anyway, everyone should read this lovely person’s fics because they’re honestly VERY well done!!

Chapter 17: The Task at Hand

Newt knows how to help, but is afraid.

Newt figures the best way to go about breaking the news is to be as cryptic as possible. It cuts back on the amount of time Hermann can be mad at him about the whole thing. This, then, of course, snowballs into deciding to tell Hermann last minute, which snowballs into telling Hermann on the taxi drive to MIT. Best to have the conversation in front of a witness in case Hermann murders him or something. “Okay,” Newt says, feeling a bit weird in his suit. “So here’s the deal.”

“Oh no,” Hermann sighs. “What have you done now?”

“Well,” Newt says. “It’s not exactly what I’ve done and more what I haven’t done. Please don’t be pissed. I promise it’s not too bad.”

“You’re not inspiring much confidence.” Hermann is already looking at him warily.

How to explain? Back before he got sent off to Hong Kong, back when Newt was still teaching, back when he and Hermann still wrote to each other–well, Newt wasn’t exactly subtle about holding a deep admiration for his new genius penpal. And he was young, barely out of his early twenties (a great deal younger than his colleagues), (and infatuated, so infatuated with Hermann, everything Hermann said, everything Hermann did), so he couldn’t really be blamed for wanting to talk about Hermann at any given chance. And it was just easier– “Back when we–you know–” Newt finally says, and Hermann tenses at the mention of Their Letters, “everyone just kind of assumed you were my boyfriend.”

Yet questions linger: how much did the Precursors take from Newt, to what lengths will Hermann go to free him, and is the other even truly there, or merely a rabbit of the other’s making, a wish fulfillment fantasy that they’re chasing into the abyss?
