Okay but:

  • Ripped Thorin.
  • Thorin who is a foot and a half taller than Bilbo.
  • Thorin with hands that are rough from overuse.
  • Thorin with battle scars and burn marks from the forge.
  • Thorin with tattoos.
  • Thorin with body piercings.
  • THORIN WHO IS MUCH LARGER THAN BILBO AND ROUGHER AND FOREIGN AND BILBO IS SO INTO THAT IT KIND OF CONFUSES HIM AT FIRST.

Meanwhile:

  • Bit fluffy around the middle Bilbo.
  • Bilbo who has to crane his neck to look Thorin in the eye.
  • Bilbo with small soft hands, only callused where a trowel or pen sits.
  • Bilbo with scars that only have stories of childish mischief attached to them.
  • Bilbo with freckles and the gently olive skin that comes from gardening.
  • Bilbo who has never even heard of piercings anywhere but on the ears.
  • BILBO WHO IS SO MUCH SMALLER THAN THORIN AND SOFTER AND IT LEAVES THORIN SORT OF BLUSHY AND SCARED TO BREAK HIM.

Leave me here to die.

Barbed by fredbassett (canon divergence, post-auj, bagginshield; hurt/comfort, drama, romance) in which bilbo earns his first proper war wound, and thorin sees him through it

Of ravens and flowers by obssessiveskylark (canon divergence, everyone lives, bagginshield; pre-slash, friendship) bilbo tries to brush up on his art skills, with a little help from some friends

Beggar in the Morning by Sylla (post-auj, bagginshield; pre-slash, drama, friendship) somewhat the worse for wear after dealings with orcs and wargs and giant eagles, thorin tries to take some time to brood think – tries being the operative word

PSA: Thorin never loved anything for himself, always had obligations and duties and people he put before himself before he met Bilbo. It was the first time he loved something solely for him and not because he had to or was conditioned to but because he wanted to

This is literally true, he never loved anyone but his family until he met Bilbo. This is why his nephews are his heirs and not, you know, his children that don’t exist because he never fell in love with anyone before Bilbo.

I have an ancillary headcanon.

Thorin is a romantic. In the book he’s prone to long speeches and elevating situations. He wants things to be dramatic and poetic and lovely. In the movie he is an endless ball of schmoop who is 99% affection and loyalty and responsibility and 1% idiot.

You will never convince me that he did not spend his youth before Smaug hearing stories about love. Memorizing dwarven fairy tales. You will never convince me that he did not spend the years of exile fantasizing as he walked and worked about the day when he would find his love and finally finally have that. He dreamed about finding someone who would make this struggle bearable. Someone who would gladly shoulder his burdens and help without caring who he was.

You will never convince me that the day his brother, grandfather and father were all torn away that he did not take that want and bury it in his chest so deep he never intended to touch it again.  It was as much self-protection as it was anything else. The pain of losing those he loved nearly destroyed him, so he put away the hope of ever letting someone close. He can’t stop loving the boys, but the idea he might lose them one day scares him so much he can’t breathe sometimes.

Then comes Bilbo, who, with every damn thing he does, slowly blows some of the dirt off of that hope. Who continues to thwart Thorin’s ever expectation. Who keeps digging that little light out of Thorin’s chest until there is no choice but to accept that the thing he always wanted is finally within his grasp, and he is too scared to admit it aloud, but doesn’t stop feeling it.
