He is removing a base pair with the other hand, and turning it into the protomolecule as we know it; the circle symbolizing the infinite is encompassed by the square of the earthly, which is itself encompassed by a diamond which symbolizes transformation and eternity. The red outline symbolizes the caul of blood Dresden has taken upon himself, representing those thousands which he is willing to sacrifice.
