Just a little bit of Hermann groping Newtâs belly. And it appears that Newtâs tattoo designs over his midsection look like some attempt at a âdrawn onâ kind of six-pack. Like, a six-pack made of fire and waves and such. Oh, Newt. Newt, Newt, Newt. Donât do that. Donât kid yourself. You are squishy and adorable and no amount of tattoo airbrush effect is going to change that.Â
Also, I must confess that Hermannâs teacher/headmaster tone of voice constantly invades my mind whenever I draw fan art of these two. So I tend to like my Newmann a little bit medium rare, with a scant side of dom-Hermann. And embarrassed!Newt is always my favorite. @_@ Anyhoo, contributing to the Newt Chubby Tummy love. â¤
this post brought to you by: Charlie Dayâs adorable pudgy belly and Burn Gormanâs purr-tastic voice. Also the letter B.

Summary:
The invasion of the Anteverse was successful, and the Precursors have been destroyed, but Newt still hasnât awoken from his coma and doesnât respond initially to Drift attempts from Hermann to wake him.
But when one day a connection is established, Hermann and Newt find themselves in a mingled mindscape that seems informed by Danteâs âInfernoâ. Together, they pass through the Nine Circles of Hell, nine memories of Newtâs years under Precursor control in the hopes that doing so will free Newt from his own head.
Yet questions linger: how much did the Precursors take from Newt, to what lengths will Hermann go to free him, and is the other even truly there, or merely a rabbit of the other’s making, a product of wish fulfillment and fantasy that theyâre chasing into the abyss?

OH MY GOD, it’s DONE guys! Special thanks to IDoNotBiteMyThumbAtYou and kingofsasslocks for the beta help! So sorry for the delay but this chapter is quite long in recompense. I do hope you enjoy, thank you for coming on this journey with me!
What are your thoughts on that deleted scene? Are you willing to share? I’d love to hear them!
Oh sure, Anon! For reference, theyâre referring to this scene with Newt pushing Hermann into the elevator after clashing with Raleigh.Â

First of all, itâs been observed elsewhere that the level of touchy-feeliness between Hermann and Newt is familiar liek woah, I dunno about you but I wouldnât tolerate a despised colleague manhandling me like that. It speaks to a fairly intimate relationship (more like bickering exes or an âold married coupleâ than acquaintances). Newt just blithely begins touching Hermann and Hermannâs reaction is barely annoyed by it, and he reacts as if expecting it SO, first thereâs that. (A good argument could be made that it was cut because the science boys were being too familiar for their arc of âlearning to like each otherâ at this point.)
But whatâs more fascinating to me is that moment in juxtaposition with this one:

âPlease excuse him, heâs a Kaiju groupie.â
These scenes back to back show a certain level of very fascinating protectiveness of one another against outsiders. Yes theyâre insulting one another, but the tone of the insult is taking note of their qualities and protecting each other from themselves. Hermann is calling him a Kaiju groupie, but heâs also asking the outsider to forgive Newt, points out that itâs a harmless foible, and not to take it personally (and, for example, punch Newt in the face which if someone in that elevator had lost family to Yamarashi he would KINDA DESERVE).Â
(Aside: the calling one another âharmlessâ implication is also interestingly echoed by Newt in Uprising telling Shao that Hermann is harmless, which could be seen as dismissive but could also be read as extremely protective. âDonât look at him, heâs not dangerous,â heâs saying, distracting the attention of someone who could conceivably be very dangerous to Hermann if she so chose.)
But to go back to what we learn about Newt from that exchange about not saluting:
This moment, combined with Newtâs later command of âMove, you fascist!â to Herc Hansen is the root of a lot of on-screen evidence of Newtâs anti-authoritarian tendencies. That, and the shots of him at the protest in the Drift, along with his general demeanor and appearance with the tattoos.
But Newt does work with a military organization and he is a genius. Heâs definitely not stupid. Thereâs another level of âdonât saluteâ that instantly pinged me as protective of Hermann, and perhaps subtly warning him against being a military groupie in the same way that Hermann cautions Newt about being a Kaiju groupie.Â
Being in the military chain of command can get you hurt. If Hermann is a military officer, it means heâs subject to commands. Commands that in time of war he could, in the most extreme examples, be legally shot on the spot for ignoring. Yes thereâs such thing as conscientious objector, or refusing to take an illegal order, but proving those is an upward slog and militaries have been known to do everything in their power and stall the process for years of anyone who tries to prove they were justified in stepping out of line. Yes, being an officer has a certain glamor, but it loses you a lot of freedom and privileges of being a civilian. You can be muzzled, your work can be classified, you can be passed around to bad commanding officers, your life can be made a living hell, and you have very little recourse because of the nature of war and your orders.Â
To my eyes, Newt here isnât just telling Hermann to stop being ridiculous by playing at being a soldier when he isnât one. Yes itâs implied Hermann is starry-eyed about military organizations ever since âSpace Championâ, and that he wanted to be a Jaeger pilot himself before external factors prevented that, so he makes up for it by being the next best thing and by saluting even when he doesnât have to. But Newt is telling Hermann, âI promise, you donât actually want to be an officer because it isnât cool and it isnât safe.â Saluting may seem innocent, but it is showing Hermann as having a desire to enter to the chain of command, and the chain of command is not innocent.Â
So maybe itâs a reach, maybe itâs too much of a nuance, but these two scenes back to back tell me that both Newt and Hermann do their best to protect one another, in their own backhand-compliment way, against outsiders and from the dangerous things that fascinate them.
How often do you think the K-Science nerds had to make good with powerful benefactors in order to keep funding going? And were either of them any good at it?
full and complete disclosure: i am forever endlessly amused at the thought of newt and hermann being sent to ridiculously extravagant galas and having to schmooze with the Rich and Powerful to get funding because no, actually, theyâd be TERRIBLE at it. newt is obnoxious about everything and hermann may think he has better people skills but he doesnât whatsoever and they end up offending everyone because they say exactly whatâs on their minds and then spend the rest of the night lurking in a corner and stealing free food (they wonât admit it but they actually kind of have fun together)
Oh my god, they totally only didnât like each other when they met because they were awkward and they both thought the other one was ignoring their advances from their letters!
twenty years later theyre married and hermannâs like how could you NOT know i was trying to seduce you when i said your handwriting was exquisite
