Headcanon that after Hermann accepts that Newt is ghosting him, he still sends him emails like all the time. But not really because he expects a response or even Newt to read them. It’s just like sending messages out into the void, writing only for himself about whatever’s on his mind and his day and all that. And he finds out later Newt read every single one and he has Thoughts.

god this is my hc for how the separation went too pretty much? i think hermann kept emailing even when newt stopped replying regularly and i think maybe the precursors let newt make the most basic replies every now and then (ie avoiding discussing work/only making boring small talk) just enough that it doesn’t arouse too much suspicion like newt cutting out hermann entirely would (and newt’s replies got shorter and less and less frequent each time before they stop altogether)

hermann just. continuing to send him stuff anyway after newt seemingly stops caring is so SAD. but at the same time i feel like newt (once he’s freed from precursor control w the power of love thanks) would really, really appreciate it, because he’s already been forcefully separated from the man he loves for ten years but at least he wasn’t cut off from him entirely? he still sort of has an idea of what the decade’s been like for hermann even if he couldn’t reply, current hermann’s not a complete stranger to him

Old married Newmann hc: Newt and Hermann both try to retire, like, eight times and it never takes. Hermann gets bored and keeps doing research at home and goes back to teaching because He May As Well Get Paid For His Work. Newt takes One Week Of Retirement before he misses his lab and his grad students too much. Catch Hermann at 80 still terrifying undergrads with group theory and Newt at 79 still elbows deep in a dissection teaching a seminar, training up the new guard of young scientists :,)

i LOVE this…undergrads see them arguing in the hallways about stuff that happened decades prior. newt still refuses to follow proper lab safety precautions and rolls his sleeves up and doesn’t wear goggles and is like “don’t be like me kids”
