the beautiful thing about hermann gottlieb is that he’s terribly wounded at his core (”politics, poetry, promises, those are lies–”) because he’s someone who has been beaten down by life over and over and over and he buried himself in this defence mechanism in which he pretends like he has abandoned faith and only trusts in rationality and tangible rules (”–numbers are the handwriting of g-d”) because their inevitability is so comforting to him
but of course he’s lying. not only to other people but also to himself. the very language he uses to talk about this betrays him already.
and that’s what makes his story work: that this man who by all accounts presents himself to everyone as someone who scoffs at irrationality and avoids the company of human beings as a protective measure is also the one person who would, against all logic, be ready to sacrifice his life and all rights to privacy to protect the people he loves and the world in general
it’s ironic because drifting is a promise in a sense, and the type he and newt attempted is probably the biggest one of its kind, and he doesn’t even hesitate when it comes to it. he’s ready to tear down every single wall he’s built up over the course of his life because he believes so deeply in the cause and in people in general and i love him so much i could cry

Who is prepared for me to talk about how I think Hermann doms the bejeezus out of Newt and all headcanons connected to this fact?
SORRY IM LATE I PROMISE I DIDNT FORGET I had to do adult things like groceries and making dinner fuckin wild.
So here we go point by disjointed point. My run down on Newt Is A Bratty Masochistic Sub and Delightedly Amazed To Discover Hermann Gottlieb Is A Freak As Well.
Because I’m late to the ship Im just now exploring the post-apocalypse pre-relationship period they had. So here are non-spoilery post movie one thoughts on the grand time after they drifted but before they finally banged.
Where they drove absolutely everyone around them up the fucking wall because I refuse to believe those two knew how to handle sexual tension.
Everywhere they go (touring and lecturing) they get banned from every 24/7 diner. Like you’d assume the shouty one is the problem and that’s until Hermann responds to the statement “your formulas can sUCK MY DICK HERM” by hooking his cane on Newt’s elbow and making him spill coffee all over the place and then chewing him out for getting coffee on the papers.
They go back to the shatterdome when the PPDC invites them to head ongoing research. This means their quarters are now in walking distance from each other.
This leads to what became a breaking point for other inhabitants of the dome and especially the poor assholes who have living quarters near either of them. When Hermann, at 2:26AfuckingM, kept knocking on Newt’s door until Newt slammed it open shrieking “WH AT THE FU-oh hey Herm”
Hermann just hands him a stack of papers going, “Here’s the proof. You can, as you would say, choke on THAT” before calmly walking off.
Newt screams, at what is now 2:34AM, down the hall “I DON’T CHOKE ON SHIT HERMANN!! I FUCKING SWALLOW!”
That morning Tendo sends a poll out to the entire shatterdome:
“Which is worse: When our heads of research just regularly hated each other or the current WEIRD SEXUAL TENSION? Poll closes at midnight.”
First response is:
“THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU DUDE????!
Dr.Newton Geiszler.
Head of Kaiju Biological Research, PPDC.”Second response is:
“Mr. Choi,
Prepare for a meeting with HR.
General Mako Mori
Ps: Raleigh says it is worse now”
Hermann responds in person by barging into OPS with the Hermann-Equivalent of “HOW DARE YOU???? I’VE NEVER WANTED TO SLEEP WITH GEISZLER IN MY LIFE HOW DARE YOU!!! NEWTON IS- IS TERRIBLE FACIAL WISE FIRST OF ALL! AND HOW DO I KNOW YOURE NOT THE ONE WHO WANTS TO SLEEP WITH NEWT????? HUH??? CHECK AND MATE”
“You went from ‘Geiszler’ to ‘Newt’ in one short rant it’s almost cute.”
To which a red-faced Hermann answers that he is filing a formal complaint and he hopes they send Tendo straight to hell.
Unfortunately for everyone it only gets SLIGHTLY better when they become a couple except now they get complaints from other people over Newt sexually harassing his colleague in front of everyone.
