replied to your post “Lord save me from reluctant heroes. A writerly pet peeve of mind is…”
Even though my favourite character of all time is Frodo Baggins, the ultimatest “reluctant hero” ever, I agree with every word you say here!
But Frodo is NOT a reluctant hero! He is in fact the opposite and it does him a great disservice that he’s so often lumped in as some example of an everyman character or a chosen one! Frodo was NOT chosen, it’s very explicitly stated that anyone could have carried the Ring and that he volunteered. To stick with the film, it’s true that he thought the Council of Elrond would be his chance to pass the burden along, but once it became clear that wasn’t an option he was the first to take responsibility for seeing the Quest through to the end. He continued despite MANY chances to turn back or give the burden to someone else. Even in the Shire he did not volunteer to take the Ring just because he thought he’d be getting out of it soon, he was prepared to go on an extremely dangerous mission for who knew how long in order to protect his home. Certainly in his early naïveté he had no way of knowing how long that journey would be, but he never balked at it.
some random colored doodles from my sketchbook! I’ve been trying to work with markers + colored pencils, and it’s quite the fun combo! especially with how much you can get a smooth coverage for stuff like skin tones and such~
Becoming Penguin Family
I don’t know why I took you in after your mother and father died, but it wasn’t out of charity. I think it was because, of all my numerous relations, you were the one that showed real… spirit.
