Tag: bagginshield
Guys, guys guys guys, do you remember before BotFA came out and we were all PRAYING that the Mithril Shirt scene would be as gay as we hoped AND THEN THE ACORN SCENE HAPPENED???
An Anon and @maybemalapert prompted “I wish you would write a fic where Bilbo is the one gold sick. (because I would love to see one written by you)”
And I am very happy to oblige! This was a great warmup for the evening, I hope you guys enjoy :3 You can also read it on AO3.
The Bewilderment of Treasure
The coins felt lovely around Bilbo’s feet as he wandered through the treasury, the cool metal as soothing as velvet against his fevered skin. As far as the eye could see were piled works of sheer beauty, wrought from gold and gems. He fondled a ruby the size of a goose egg, smiling to himself at the way it sparkled and shone so delightfully in the glow of the torches.
“Aye, of course dwarves can resist the power of gold, it’s in our blood. But the other races… they are not so hardy.”
“We should never have sent him down here.”
“We need to find Gandalf.”
The dwarves yet haunted the treasury, still searching for the Arkenstone no doubt. But they would never find it, Bilbo thought with a faint smile. Smaug had said it would be dangerous for them. There was no choice but to keep it from them, from Thorin, carried secret and safe in the inside pocket of Bilbo’s coat. Who knew what terrible things it would do their minds should they find it?
He was, after all, a very good friend.
Bilbo stopped, a dark shape blocking his path. Beyond it, a row of fine statues made from solid gold, eyes picked out in sapphires, lined the path. He wanted to touch them, to feel the metal beneath his hands, knowing the uncountable wealth it embodied.
“Bilbo, amrâlimê, please come back to us,” a voice pleaded. Hands brushed Bilbo’s shoulders but he brushed them away irritably, focused on his path.
“It’s no use, Thorin. He can’t hear you.”
“If not for those blasted armies we could at least get him away from here!”
“… Perhaps there is something to that. If we could convince him to take the Arkenstone to them? Thranduil would give him safe passage if he thought he would gain the stone.”
“But Bilbo still does not realize we know he has it?”
“Aye, it may take some hinting to get the idea into his head. Thorin, perhaps if he thought he was helping you?”
“Anything. I will do anything.”
“Once he’s out we can watch him from the walls, make sure he arrives safely to the camps.”
“I only pray that leaving the mountain will be enough to cure him.”
“What other choice do we have?”
Bilbo shook his head, the voices sounding like no more than buzzing gnats in his ear. The Arkenstone… yes, none of this wealth was as beautiful as the stone. He should find a quiet place to sit and look at it for awhile. Away from the others, of course. He didn’t want Thorin to see.
It was the only way to keep him safe.

No Heir of Durin + 3 for the writing meme?
3) What’s your favorite line of narration?
I have to say it’s a toss up between:
The babe had fallen asleep against his hand, and did not wake when Bilbo covered his face in the crook of his arm and gave himself up to dry, wracking sobs.
And
No heir of Durin he, but ah, Thorin, Bilbo thought as he mounted the plank for the ship to the West, his nephew not far behind, you would have been proud of him nonetheless.
Because in a story that was so heartbreaking that it actually hurt me to write it (damn you canon-compliance!) I think those two lines were the most impactful and the most painful. Despite what I see a lot in fanon, Bilbo actually doesn’t cry that often (only twice, and both were as a result of Thorin’s death) so I wanted to capture that understated pain that Martin is so good at portraying and as a less experienced writer then, I was very proud of myself for I think capturing it. The last line is basically the point of the whole story and contains all the emotion I think I was going for, and many people said it was the line where they finally lost it, so I’m proud of that one too.
(For those curious, the fic can be found here)
Thank you for the question! ❤
For the writing meme: Prayers to Broken Stone. He looked down to the hobbit before him. Bilbo was still, waiting for something, and Thorin’s expression twisted in anguish that must have been a horror to behold. “Why didn’t you kill me?”The bow and arrow clattered to the ground. Fíli and Kíli cried out in alarm as Bilbo broke free of their grasp, and in a few steps stood directly before Thorin.
Ooh! Thank you for sending this, this was an interesting moment!
It’s always a challenge between not banging the audience over the head with something and leaving it for them to interpret, versus the possibility that something gets lost in translation.
SO, what’s happening here is the whole Company + Bilbo is waiting to see what happened, whether or not the Dragon will bring Thorin’s consciousness back to the surface. As you’ll recall, Bilbo basically challenged the Dragon to let them speak to Thorin to work out some kind of deal where the Dragon wouldn’t need to be killed, as the Dragon has just realized it’s cornered and if it can’t prove that Thorin is still alive in there somewhere, the Dwarves will just kill it as they have it surrounded, and it’s still too “young” and weak to defend itself (especially with Gandalf there).
That’s why when Thorin is caught in the dream sequence which is a representation of him being swallowed up by the Dragon’s consciousness, it comes to an abrupt halt when he overhears the words Bilbo had said to the Dragon in the previous chapter, “Let us be the judge of that.” – regarding whether they can let the Dragon live if Thorin is still in there. SO, the Dragon fearing for its own life allows Thorin’s consciousness to surface, presumably to bargain for both their lives.
However, as Bilbo reflects later, they had no idea whether or not the Dragon would or could produce Thorin’s consciousness again, if he had indeed been completely swallowed up. And it would have served the Dragon well to close its eyes, pretend that it was summoning Thorin, and then when they all leaned in in anticipation, it would bake them with its fire breath. Bilbo is pretty much certain in that moment that it’s going to be a trick, that he’s going to lean in because he can’t help himself and get barbecued (and he’s actually somewhat ok with the idea in that moment of desperation, because, while I don’t write Bilbo as suicidal, in that particular moment to lose Thorin totally, to know he had died when the transformation began, would just be too much to bear).
Of course, Thorin doesn’t know any of this. He just knows he “lost” to the Dragon when he let it into his mind, he expected to be dead already, and when he opens his eyes, everyone is looking at him in horror and suspense. He doesn’t recognize that it’s horror at the Dragon, he thought it was obvious once it had arrived (once he was essentially “dead”) their only safe move would be to kill his body before it could become another full dragon in Erebor (his worst nightmare).
“Why didn’t you kill me?” is a uniquely Thorin thing to say with regards to these events. The Dragon would never say that. It’s how the Company and Bilbo know it really is Thorin in there.
In addition, Thorin and the Dragon have completely different body language. The Dragon is comfortable on all fours, Thorin is obviously not comfortable in a dragon body. We don’t really see here, but after resuming consciousness he is “sitting up”, rubbing his head, being in general a two-legged creature disoriented in a four-legged body. That, combined with him asking why they didn’t kill him, is instant proof for Bilbo and the Company that this is indeed Thorin and not a trick of the Dragon, so he’s not dead, so they do have one last chance to save him since the cure requires Thorin’s consciousness. Bilbo was waiting for that kind of irrefutable proof that Thorin is back, and everything after that is sheer relief, and of course it’s why the dwarves also drop their weapons and are no longer prepared to fight.
And of course, Thorin was not expecting the hug either 😉
Bilbo Baggins and Thorin Oakenshield are in love and nothing you say will make me think otherwise
Me: Why can’t my favorite characters just be HAPPY?
