waiting for the moment to find me
by freezerjerky
“I want you back, baby,” Newt says softly. “Do you think I would buy expensive champagne for just anyone?”
“Do you think,” Hermann pauses, setting his jaw with determination, “that calling me a pet name I despise and ordering me expensive food will win me back after the callousness with which you broke up with me?”
in which Hermann realizes something’s wrong with Newt and decides the only way to save him is to date him

Summary:The invasion of the Anteverse was successful, and the Precursors have been destroyed, but Newt still hasn’t awoken from his coma and doesn’t respond initially to Drift attempts from Hermann to wake him.
But when one day a connection is established, Hermann and Newt find themselves in a mingled mindscape that seems informed by Dante’s “Inferno”. Together, they pass through the Nine Circles, nine memories of Newt’s years under Precursor control in the hopes it will help free Newt from his own head.
Yet questions linger: how much did the Precursors take from Newt, to what lengths will Hermann go to free him, and is the other even truly there, or merely a rabbit of the other’s making, a wish fulfillment fantasy that they’re chasing into the abyss?

One of these days, I swear, I’m gonna figure out a way to write an essay on the current sensibilities of fanfiction, with their focus on emotional and interpersonal plotlines, and how it’s a rebirth of the 19th c. sentimental movement in novels and likely derives from similar impulses and demographics – a female dominated (though not exclusive, of course) culture of prolific readers and writers, writing in contrast and response to a rationalist movement by elevating emotional plotlines and the “finer feelings” rather than suppressing them.
Sentimental novels relied on emotional response, both from their readers and characters. They feature scenes of distress and tenderness, and the plot is arranged to advance both emotions and actions. The result is a valorization of “fine feeling,” displaying the characters as a model for refined, sensitive emotional effect. The ability to display feelings was thought to show character and experience, and to shape social life and relations.
And indeed, there could well be a direct correlation, as the sentimental movement was despised by writers like Herman Melville (y’know the “Great American Novel” guy), mostly because they vastly out sold him in his lifetime, and there was a whole male-dominated literary movement after that aimed at elevating books like Moby Dick and denigrating these women-written sentimental novels for that very reason. This movement dominated the way Western literature was taught (all those “old white men” even though pound for pound, there were far more female novel writers than male ones in the 19th c., but you rarely hear of them) throughout the 20th c. The pendulum swings back and forth, and since fanfiction is such a petri dish of unbridled creativity (on a vast scale of quality levels, of course) and is in reaction to many more restrictive mainstream and literary trends, I suspect that if I were to dig into this more I’d find that the similarities and connections go deeper than I realized.
Send me an anymous (or not) summary of the fic you wish I would write. (maybe I will write a tidbit)
Finally wrote a scene for TOWOID ch 16 between Newt and Jake that I’ve been dying to write for AGES. Stayed up until 4am doing so. These chaotic punk rock gays have a lot to say to each other, lol, their “scene” is as long as some short fics. But it’s nice because I think it finally closes the loop on any lingering questions about the Anteverse invasion that happened before the story began, what’s been going on with Hermann, and maybe answers some questions about Jake too. Idk, it was just really fun to write for how it showed the way the characters had changed, and it was fun to get out of the WAY, because I still have a couple of Newmann scenes to write in that chapter before I consider it done but I really wanted to make sure this scene was included too :3

Here is another Hermann!! That I don’t think I’ve posted yet but that I really really like.
Everybody else’s takes on Hermann being the one w/ the sick tattoos seem to run towards the tasteful; delicate math and programming- inspired tattoos that are easy to hide under umpty million layers of clothing. I decided to take a different tack with sloppy trash polka fractals and a Euler’s identity formula for luck.
This is hardcore Hermann. Fight club hermann? Come to the lab in the next 15 minutes for an asskickin’.
Unedited version below the cut (not really all that spicy but just in case you find shirtless art objectionable)

Strapped down to something that you don’t understand
Don’t know what you were getting yourself into
You should have known
Secretly, I think you knew (x)Calling it done. Been staring at the lines for too long, and this was supposed to be a quick diversion.
I love Newt, but I want to see him suffer some consequences from mind melding with a giant alien beastie.
