I and S if you’re keen :)
Thank you, Anon!
I) Do you have a guilty pleasure in fic (reading or writing)?
I’m super predictable in this respect but any combination of unwanted Physical Transformation and/or Mental Subversion. Anything from fairly innocent sex pollen type stuff to mind control to baleful polymorph “turning into something I despise” (though I’m not a fan of physical pain as an aspect, or the mental subversion taking place between two characters I prefer to see in a healthy relationship towards each other). Reading it, writing it, idk how or when or why the bug bit me but it’s basically my #1 jam from the Winter Soldier, to Nolan’s Two Face, to Thorin’s dragon sickness, to Newt Geiszler’s possession, etc etc. It’s the one certain way to grab me with a character arc (though it does need to be treated sympathetically and usually involved someone close to them being impacted or horrified by the transformation as well).
S) Any fandom tropes you can’t resist?
I mean, the above is pretty much my fav, but I do love me some good Dark Fic (which has sadly been in decline since all the really messed up angsty stuff I read in the early 2000s when that was like the cool thing to read and write) the aforementioned physical and mental stuff in the previous point (especially where it overlaps with smut but I am not gonna go into much detail on that here but let’s say as an example: sex pollen). I love “Everything that could go wrong, did go wrong (but no one died and there’s a happy ending waaaay at the end)” and epic, novel-length canon AUs. Basically: I love authors who break my heart to pieces, make me physically ache for the characters, and then make it all better by the end (and I strive to do that in my own fics).
I just realized I kinda answered these in reverse but they’re kinda similar questions? Basically both answers apply to both questions ;P
honestly i’m so enamoured with the widespread fanon characterisation of thorin and bilbo in a relationship with each other,,, how absolutely smitten they are and how devoted,, any fanon work that fails to portray the endless tenderness these two exhibit towards each other, has to try HARDER okay it’s 2018
In Cambridge-verse: How does Hermann’s first time saying he loves Newt go? I’m assuming Newt has said it like 500 times by that point. Like at one point Hermann made him a sandwich and he tells him that, he’s that kind of person.
Not great? This is actually going to be in the next chapter of Effort but here’s an excerpt because you sent this ask roughly 100 years ago and you’ve been so patient and supportive.
…
“Is it actually inevitable?” Newt said steadily, “or are you just trying to prove your hypothesis rather than taking the data,” he gestured frantically to himself, “at face value. It’s bad science, Hermann. You’re being a bad scientist.”
“How dare – this is not a science exp-”
“EVERYTHING is science Hermann! What can I do? What further data can I provide for you, man? I love you! I’ve been busting my ass to prove it this last year! And you’ve just been, what? Wringing your hands? Driving yourself crazy with this, like, operatic downfall you’ve made up? What can I do? Tell me!”
“There’s nothing you can do.”
Newt stood and approached Hermann so fast that he didn’t clock the movement until Newt was right there in his face. “So just leave then!”
“I can’t! I can’t just leave!” Hermann hissed. It was as though Newt was being purposely obtuse. “I love you, and that complicates things, rather a lot.”
Newt looked like he was about to give a biting retort but stopped mid-breath, “Oh.” He said instead, visibly deflating. “Do you know you’ve never said that?”
“Said what?” Hermann blinked, “That I love you?”
“Yeah that.”
“Have I not?”
Newt grimaced and shook his head.
“My goodness…” Hermann mumbled, his defensive venom cooled by the distraction, “I let that go on a bit too long then didn’t I?”
“Yeah you sure did, bud!” His voice carried all the inflections of joviality but his face was utterly unamused.
@idonotbitemythumbatyou asked for H! N! T! on the fanfic meme!
I’m gonna stick to Pacific Rim/Newmann answers for this since that’s the fandom we share!
H: How would you describe your style?
I’ve been thinking about this a lot late so forgive me if I ramble!
– I tend to keep a very “close POV” 3rd person/past tense, meaning we’re ALMOST inside the characters heads and see the world filtered through their perspective, but we’re just short of first person.
– I tend to focus a LOT on description and sensual details. I want you to feel and see things, that’s what I consider “success” as a writer. I also try to be visceral and make the prose itself give the flavor of the story in every line. Though lately I’ve been thinking about and practicing a lot at story structure – I want to writer fanfic where you get more out of it if you’re familiar with the source material but in theory you don’t need to and you can still get the story, as a stepping stone to writing my own original novels.
– I tend to do character-driven (borderline character study) pieces with two people in isolation and their circumstances/an off-screen villain serving as the antagonist. To the point where I probably need to stop locking my ship in a room together with the-evil-creature-that-possessed-one-of-them as the antagonist for every one of my stories because it’s getting repetitive ;P
– For my prose style, I’m influenced by Peter S Beagle and Anne Rice for my more flowery and sensual prose, and some elements of Terry Brooks for my cleaner and more informative exposition. I try to be clear enough that even English-as-a-Second-Language people can have a good time and I don’t feel a need to show off a broad vocabulary. I think a simple, visceral word is always better, but I do love to nail you between the eyes with a beautiful metaphor or the occasional philosophical observation whenever it is elegant and not intrusive to do so. My prose has been described as clean and earnest, with an “aged” feeling (when writing fantasy) and some elegant flourishes. I don’t try to tell you what you should see, I try to describe to you the important elements and then guide your brain to fill in the rest with what would be most powerful to you (ie instead of saying “she had XYZ physical features which were beautiful” say “her beauty gave off XYZ impressions” so you get a sensation more than a portrait?) Sorry to ramble on this one, I think about this a lot though!
N: Is there a fic you wish someone else would write (or finish) for you?
I frickin’ LOVE big action-packed, novel-length angsty-and-epic canon divergence fics where like “One TINY but entirely plausible thing changed so now we’re on a COMPLETELY different adventure and no one dies like in canon but it gets DARK before the dawn.”
Like I’d love to see a PR1 AU where all the Jaeger pilots survived but they all failed to close the Breach because maybe they didn’t get Newt and Hermann’s intelligence in time, so the bomb bounced off the Breachand they didn’t have another one ready, so Kaiju are just POURING in now and humanity is like, just getting CRUSHED with no hope of holding them back anymore so it’s like post-apocalyptic, Newt, Hermann, Raleigh and Mako in a hidden bunker somewhere trying to clone enough Kaiju tissue to trick the Breach and building like… a tiny submarine to deliver a nuclear warhead they scrounged from somewhere to collapse it on their own, and HOPING they don’t get EATEN in their tiny submarine along the way. Just REALLY impossible odds against them but a much smaller, more intimate and character-driven story of the TRUE final days??
T: Any fandom tropes you can’t stand?
This got a bit rambly because I wanted to ensure all the proper nuance is there in explaining that it’s less things I “can’t stand” and more things I just do differently for my own reasons.
I had a lot more squicks in the Hobbit fandom than I do in PacRim because I spent more time there and I was sort of just this side of being a Tolkien scholar so I had a lot of little pet peeves around the language the characters used (Hobbits using Yavanna as a deity) and the way certain characters were often portrayed (shrinking violet Bilbo and DFP Thorin).
For Pacific Rim, specifically Newmann I am still early enough in my reading that everything I read is pretty much fresh and amazing sooooo it’s probably less a trope but a thing I felt the need to do differently? Which I guess I would kiiiinda call Shattered Victim Newt and Straight Man Hermann?
I see some recovery fics where Newt is kinda helpless and battered as a result of his possession where I kinda want to point out that 1) we have no on-screen evidence that the Precursors used pain to control him or that he’s particularly traumatized (as of Uprising). Canonically it looks more like they hid stuff from him in his own mind, dosed him with pleasure through Alice so that he stayed in contact with them but maybe didn’t even realize that was what he was doing, and maybe just swapped out his motivations, asking him “IF you wanted to destroy the world HOW would you do it?”. Evidence points to him unraveling from being lonely and far away from grounding influences like Hermann but not necessarily tortured.
So on the one hand, I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND why fanon would make his experience traumatic in order to create real world parallels like abuse, addiction, or being a prisoner of war. I did that too in TOWOID and I’ll probably lean heavily into that with the Prisoner’s Dilemma/Kidnapping AU. It makes for a more relatable struggle BUT I’ve seen some common assumptions in recovery arcs that Newt would be broken and shrinking and scared of his own shadow in the aftermath and it’s less that I’m saying “don’t do that” (I abhor telling authors what to do) and it’s more like… “examine the canon evidence, are you doing this because it’s an artistic choice or because you just assume based on other fanon?”
Basically, I like to think Newt’s courage is still there, as his obnoxiousness, and his flaws, and his combativeness. I totally think he’s once bitten twice shy in a lot of ways and probably got a BIG dose humility served up to him on a LOT of fronts, but I don’t think he’s crying and shattered and unable to raise his voice or anything because he’s So Scared after being possessed? He’s definitely not the devil-may-care wunderkind boy genius whose only limits were what his mind could achieve anymore after. He’s been smacked HARD across the face with the dangers of flying too close to the sun. BUT I also don’t think he’d regret it because he did, legitimately, SAVE THE WORLD with that Drift! The question is the consequences, and how complicit is he in the aftermath? The level of complicity is where I think the most interesting transformation of Newt comes from in fanon, because literally every little millimeter nudge on the dial of how involved he was with the Precursor plan is an ENTIRELY different level of coping afterwards. No complicity? Maybe he’s just pissed! And crying because Hermann almost got killed! Total complicity, or convinced he’s complicit? I mean, if there’s anything of him left to have regrets at all, that’s a lot of guilt to cope with. But I still think, under all that, he’s still Newt? Or at least, that’s how I like to write him (because now that I think of it the fic where he’s really NOT NEWT anymore after is super tragic and a sadistic side of me wants to read but like… a one-shot because that’s not something I can wallow in).
As for Hermann, much easier to sum up. I like it when he’s eccentric too. And driven, and an obsessive, and probably a bit of a difficult person to be around. Sometimes I’ve seen Hermann just always being the one sighing at Newt’s antics but even in PR1 HERMANN IS SO EMBARRASSING, GUYS!! Newt is louder but Hermann is WEIRD, and he’s sweeter in Uprising but he’s still WEIRD. And even if he went into full Avenging Angel mode to save Newt I think he’d have a lot of quirks, he’d struggle with the interpersonal relationships needed to win people to his way of thinking, he’d have blindspots and biases about his own behavior and he’d be just a STRANGE PERSON, and that is person for Newt and why they’re perfect for each other because they’re BOTH REALLY WEIRD in different ways and I love that. If that makes sense?

I will never stop thinking it’s extremely fucked up that creators will get less credit and more shit, for trying to be progressive and inclusive but falling short in some way, than creators who don’t try at all.
And they will never not ‘fall short’ because no creation will accurately reflect the experience and worldview of every member of a marginalized group that’s depicted. Marginalized people are also individuals with wildly different lives from one another, after all.
But of course we don’t tear apart creations that only have white cis straight able characters. We don’t even notice that they’re not even bothering to try … and when we do, too many of us shrug and think it’s too much work to try to make them change.
Instead we do what everyone else already does: pick on the people who are trying because we know they care.
(But when we’re all doing that, with the huge amount of access that modern social media gives us to creators, it’s clear that pressure is nigh unbearable.)
god only knows
Newton goes grey first, much to his complete and utter dismay.

As always your meta and analysis is spot-on. Do you think there’s any chance that, if it had been Hermann to do the solo drift, the Precursors would’ve been able to manipulate and dig and twist his fears and desires until he did what they wanted?
That’s very sweet of you to say, thank you Anon!
Short answer: Absolutely yes! Hermann would have fallen too had he gone through the circumstances Newt did instead.
I have a little bit of a unified theory for this that I’ve been itching to express somewhere so buckle up, buttercup.
The first time Newt Drifted with the Hive Mind he basically caught them completely flat-footed. Like, holy shit suddenly there’s this new mind in the room and it’s watching them and figuring out all this information and then suddenly it’s gone??
It was a bit like a radar ping.

(Thanks, Tumblr, for coming through with the random gif assist)
They had no idea wtf just happened, so they sent Otachi and Leatherback to investigate that area specifically. One could even argue, they sent Otachi pregnant in order to bring a brain that Newt could handle Drifting with without dying and left it on his doorstep (whoops, fell for that one hook line & sinker, Newtsters).
That’s because they needed a second Drift to target-lock on him in order to begin influencing him and drawing him into the Hive Mind.
Except that second time, you had Hermann too. Sure Hermann balanced out the Drift and definitely kept Newt alive, but it’s interesting that Hermann’s reaction to his first Drift is pretty violent, a lot like Newt’s first Drift with vomiting instead of a seizure. But Newt just kinda shakes off his second one. Very suspicious. He’s probably not influenced yet, but he’s definitely working towards the point we see in Uprising where he’s actively enjoying the experience. Which I also found very suspicious: Drifting with a non-compatible partner (and you don’t get much more non-compatible than an ALIEN SPECIES) should be painful and possibly lethal. My suspicion is, as the sophisticated bio-engineers that created the Kaiju, the Precursors have figured out a way to ping Newt’s pleasure centers and load his brain up with endorphins every time he Drifts with them. This smooths the Drift and has the added benefit of addicting Newt’s body to the process.
My suspicion is that Newt had a third Drift sometime after the Breach closed. I don’t think the Precursors were able to deliver the mind control payload after only two Drifts, but now we’re getting strictly into fanon and background plotting I’m doing for The Prisoner’s Dilemma. I do think though it was enough to get them whispering to him, and maybe it was those whispers that prompted the third Drift, or maybe it was the PPDC asking him to do it again to make sure the Precursors were really gone. Either way, he did it, and he did it without Hermann, and gotcha that’s when the Precursors had enough control over him to start directing him to Drift regularly on his own (what probably ended up being thousands of times over 10 years).
To go back to Hermann, there may have been a slight element of Newt being sympathetic to the Kaiju that made him a better host that Hermann didn’t have, thus making him a less compatible host, but I honestly doubt Newt was even terribly sympathetic to them by the end of PR1. He has his Mako shoe moment with Hannibal’s shoe and seems in general pretty freaked out and chastised in his regard for them, which makes his being taken over all the more tragic, he had matured from his previous view of Kaiju as “cool” and seemed pretty actively against them now having suffered personally.
Basically, I think anyone who Drifted twice, or three+ times as I suspect, like Newt did would have been subverted. Newt just had more access to Kaiju parts to make another brain or find one. I actually even doubt that Newt’s the first person to consider Drifting with a Kaiju, but my theory is the other ones just died or went braindead. So the Precursors saw these little radar pings, but couldn’t really do anything about them until they could triangulate the location with further Drifts.
Better fanfic authors than me have explored how they would have gotten to Hermann. Perhaps just overall disgust at the world, perhaps curiosity to expand his knowledge of Breaches by opening one himself, maybe making him think he’s creating wormhole travel on humanity’s behalf before he realizes that all roads lead to the Anteverse. But I don’t doubt for a second that anyone linked to the Hive Mind would fall, Newt was not uniquely weak or vulnerable in this.
