Drinking too much champagne, in club that’s too loud, lounging with a pack of idiot animals, Newt muses about the complicated love that might well be killing him.

Ah yes, I’ve finally hit it, the point in the second draft of TOWOID that I dread in any long fic: the edits cascade.

It’s when you change one small but necessary scene at one point in the finished draft of a fic, which means you’ve gotta tweak the emotions or the events later to fall in line. Then the cascade begins, because all the dialogue has to thread a needle now and not be TOO inconsistent with the earlier stuff or the later stuff.

Luckily in TOWOID it didn’t hit until ch. 12 (in PTBS it happened in ch. 5 OUT OF 22. IT ADDED 40,000 WORDS TO THE FINAL DRAFT) and has so far only added a couple thousand words. It’s fine, like I think the chapter will be better as a result, but I am currently bashing my head against a solid stone wall until I can get all the words to tumble into the right order.

I have a very important hot take about Hermann in Pacific Rim Uprising for you: I miss the big coat.

god same. i can only think of two reasons he wouldn’t still be wearing it and they’re both tragic, buckle up.

– he traded his fun coat for his depression coat, hence the long black number
– the kaidonovsky’s gave it to him and he can’t wear it anymore bc it makes him sad

oh nooo but imagine newts preception of time being really skewed when he was possessed so when he finally breaks free he thinks it’s only been a couple of months or something

Do you ever think about how Newt’s family takes his pulling away from them and the eventual news he’s possessed? I know we barely know anything about them but I’d like to think they really love him and I can’t imagine the precursors let him stay in touch with them, either.

i’ve wondered about this too! i haven’t personally written fic exploring his relationship with his family (i know he’s supposed to be close to his dad and uncle and whatnot but in all honesty i don’t really put stock in much extended canon beyond the blu-ray extras lol) but i can’t imagine they wouldn’t have noticed something was up, you know? if they got used to not seeing newt frequently–ie newt spending five years in hong kong for the events of pr1–that might make more sense as to how the precursors were able to separate him from them entirely. maybe he’d just text or email “updates” every now and then (sort of like how i headcanon how he was able to pull away from hermann so easily) to keep up appearances.

but i think they love him a lot TOO so as for how they’d take it: not well at all.

god newt really did spend 10 years alone and isolated didn’t he. im sad
