Summary:

The invasion of the Anteverse was successful, and the Precursors have been destroyed, but Newt still hasn’t awoken from his coma and doesn’t respond initially to Drift attempts from Hermann to wake him.

But when one day a connection is established, Hermann and Newt find themselves in a mingled mindscape that seems informed by Dante’s “Inferno”. Together, they pass through the Nine Circles, nine memories of Newt’s years under Precursor control in the hopes it will help free Newt from his own head.

Yet questions linger: how much did the Precursors take from Newt, to what lengths will Hermann go to free him, and is the other even truly there, or merely a rabbit of the other’s making, a wish fulfillment fantasy that they’re chasing into the abyss?

Next chapter is up because I have no self control. It underwent a MASSIVE re-write but I think it’s much stronger as a result, somewhat inspired by “The Blue Guitar” by cleanwhiteroom.

o shit it’s another newmann song!!!

this one is basically the 10 years apart from hermann’s perspective, ft. maximum sadness and out of character ukulele playing (and since i’ve gotten a couple asks about this, covers are welcome!!)

Someone was complaining in the Pacific Rim tag that Hermann’s wife was a WOC who’s now getting “erased” and I genuinely don’t recall her being black in the novel. Do you remember details? Because I feel like I’m taking crazy pills here.

I’m afraid I’m quite outside this debate. As I understand, Vanessa was Hermann’s “pregnant model wife” in Travis Beacham’s original imagining of the character and she only exists in any public form (outside his notes) in the novelization. Whether the novel mentions if she’s a WOC I wouldn’t know as I have not read it.

This is as good a place as any to mention it though. I was not part of the original Pacific Rim fandom. It really was Uprising that got me into the fandom, and in fact I disliked the original film when I first saw it. I found it too intense and scary, and kept the fandom deliberately at arm’s length as a result. What brought me into it at all was the Precursor Newt plotline.

I bring this up only because, for me, Uprising eliminates any extraneous fanon or quasi-canon left in the air after the original film. For example, Burn Gorman said he didn’t know about Vanessa and therefore her existence played no part in his portrayal of Hermann, and her presence is nowhere to be seen in Uprising either, which to me translates as her not existing in the film universe.  I come from the Tolkien fandom, I’m very accustomed to saying “This is book canon, this is movie canon, this is quasi-canon from some author letter, etc.” If the actor isn’t portraying Hermann as a married man, I don’t consider him one when I write because I’m writing movie canon, where actor and director quasi-canon is more important than novelization quasi-canon. Similarly, though perhaps more controversially, I don’t consider Hermann or Newt to be German in upbringing, especially after Uprising where even traces of the possibility vanish (Charlie Day is very New England in his flavor of American, and Burn doubles down on the English-ness in that film too). Their parents might be German, but in my head Hermann was raised in England and Newt was raised in Boston, and they identify as such, because neither of the actors made any (visible) effort to portray their characters as German and are very clearly English and American respectively (Burn might have tried to add some German intonation in PR1 but… honey… oh honey, no, it’s not at all apparent).

Basically, I just take what I see in the films and borrow maybe a little from the Year Zero comic, and that’s about it. I have no wider awareness or interest in the Vanessa question. There’s some great writers who do explore the various possible forms of “Vanessa” but honestly this person in the tag strikes me as the usual Tumblr drama which is thinly disguised bullying over trivial matters like whether a fictional character “exists” or not. Those who engage in it are, to me, generally speaking people who have a sadistic or bullying streak who like to cause drama and grief for others, usually because they feel a lack of control in other aspects of their life, so they try to police the enjoyment of others. My recommendation would be block, and pay them no further mind.

TEMPLE OF GARNI:

The Temple of Garni (Armenian: “Garnu tacar”) is located in the village of Garni in Kotayk Province, Armenia, and it was once a pagan temple dedicated to the Armenian sun god Mihr. Built in the middle of the 1st century CE, the Temple of Garni remarkably survived the destruction of pagan temples following Armenia’s conversion to Christianity in the 4th century CE, and countless invasions and earthquakes until its collapse in 1679 CE. After continuous excavations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries CE, the Temple of Garni was reconstructed between 1969-1975 CE. Today, it is the only free-standing Greco-Roman structure in Armenia and seen by many as a potent symbol of Armenia’s classical past as well as its deep historical ties to the civilizations of Greece and Rome.

The Temple of Garni is situated in a very strategic location, on a cliff, overlooking a range of the Geghama mountains as well as the Azat River near the Ararat Plain. Located 30 km (19 mi) from Yerevan, the Temple of Garni is quite near Geghard Monastery, which is only 11 km (7 mi) up the Azat River, and not too far from the ancient capital of Artashat. The site was inhabited in prehistoric times, and there is evidence that it was also used by the Urartians between the 8th-6th centuries BCE.

A significant part of the point of fandom, as I always experienced it, was to intentionally either find or create the most bizarre and/or disturbing shit you possibly could and watch your friends’ shocked reactions. It was not to write the same identical billion-word coffee shop AU over and over and over.

“You will never believe the fic I just found. It was some kind of near-future monkey’s paw dystopia where we had a custom-tailored, fan-run, pan-fandom archive all to ourselves… but most of the active categories were barren wastelands of identical billion-word coffee shop AUs, because writing anything more interesting would get you bullied out of the fandom, doxxed, and slapped with false pedophilia allegations by roving bands of semi-feral neo-puritans.”

“What the fuck? Who even comes up with this sick shit? Somebody dig up the link to the Lucius/Draco skullfucking fic, I need something less disturbing to scour that from my brain.”
