I just saw the Detective Pikachu trailer and I have to ask… what the ever-loving fuck did I just watch?

On Deimos [AC Odyssey spoiler]
Hey guys I just realized.
– IF the Pacific Rim anime is a prequel
– IF it takes place during the earlier days of the Kaiju War
– AND you have the team who did X-Men Evolution…
– I mean, why else would you pick THOSE PARTICULAR creators unless you were going to do “these characters, but when they were still teenagers training to be the heroes they become later”?
– So IF we go with the idea the two kids who find the Jaeger EVENTUALLY connect with the PPDC – they’ve demonstrated they’re Drift compatible and they have a Jaeger they can effectively pilot.
– So you send them to the Academy
– Where at least SEMI canonically, Mako, Chuck Hansen, and maaaaybe even the Kaidonvskys and Raleigh are at this point if you fudge the ages just a little. Technically, Newt and Hermann had a stint in the Academy too soooo…
Could we legitimately be getting an X-men Evolution take on Pacific Rim with our main characters as teens training to be pilots, and these two kid protagonists are just about introducing us to this world and giving us a central structure? I mean, if that’s the story you want to tell, this is EXACTLY the team you assemble to do it.
I know we joke a lot about how both of the science boys are convinced that THEY’RE the normal one of the two. But honestly, they’re both very unusual in a lot of ways. My question is do you think they’re both aware of how unique they are? How much has being different fed into their sense of self? Because the human race is at war and that’s got to lead to a siege mentality within the Shatterdome, and being the last remaining members of K-Science can’t help with that.
I think they know, but they couch it to themselves in their own internal narrative as like… just the way they choose to present themselves as per their preferred “cool” subculture (how others see their “cool” subculture is another matter entirely).
(Details below the cut)
Let’s start with Hermann. I’m 100% convinced Hermann knows he is an eccentric and embraces this ideal about himself. But what kind of eccentric he thinks he is is very different from how other people see him. He sees himself as like… Oxford professor, throw-back to the days where people had culture, damnit. His heroes were WWII era scientists like Alan Turing and by God, he knows his place in history and he’s going to live up to it. I think he misses out on the part where like… wearing slacks that aren’t tailored quite right and granny glasses makes him look less “respectable academic” and more “cosplaying your grandmother”. He’s trying so hard to be this intense, serious academic, and comes across a bit ridiculous as a result. Like how he makes his rants like the “Handwriting of God” speech deadly serious, and seems to have zero irony or awareness that other people are literally “wtf-ing” behind him and even Stacker is kinda ??? about why this subject came up at all. He’s very intense, very earnest, and completely unaware that no one else really sees him as he sees himself.
Meanwhile, Newt genuinely thinks of himself as a rockstar. He dresses like a member of Good Charlotte circa 2005 or maybe just like one of the Blues Brothers. He’s got the tattoos and the glasses. He’s painfully hipster (god I bet he ironically drank PBR in Boston before the Kaiju landed) with that nerd subsection of being at least mildly otaku-ish with the Kaiju obsession thing. He definitely loved the concept of Kaiju before it was cool, i.e. before they showed up for real. He buys into his own rockstar image buuuut, like Hermann trying to pull off the “respectable professor” thing I’m not sure Newt pulls off the “rockstar vibe” to the extent he’s aiming for it, given he comes across as more “hyperactive and shrieky”, and I think his attempt at “ironic nerdom” with the glasses and tie are just seen as “actually nerdy”.
To the second half of your question,I think in the last days of the Shatterdome under Pentecost you had a lot of big personalities. People to whom being part of the “The Resistance” was more important than, say, being paid, or just living out the final days of Earth with their loved ones. Everyone is kinda eccentric and aware of their own importance in that Shatterdome. It’s the opposite of a faceless organization (and probably a lot of that is GDT going by “The Rule of Cool” – everyone is really, really cool). But I also think Pentecost let a lot of regulation go by the wayside so he could recruit these best and brightest, and for Newt that was certainly a draw, who likes to march to the beat of his own drum and respects people who let him do that. Whereas for Hermann I think it was more about Doing What Must Be Done, especially after his father backed the Wall of Life, he had to make a stand with the person making the biggest stand.
One of the challenges of putting together “The Precursors” as a regularly occurring character in a fic is that we either get… almost nothing of them dialogue-wise in Uprising except the “smartest person in the room” speech to Liwen when they drop the act and slip into the Creepy Voice, or it’s all them and we get nothing of Newt except, “I’m sorry, Hermann. They’re in my head.”
But since the film is made up of the Precursors pretending to be Newt or directing him, we kiiinda have how they “changed” him to figure how the whole “what is Newt 10 years later” vs. “what is them”? So you can either go with 1) the Precursors kinda just gave Newt directives like “end the world as effectively as you can” so his motivations are all scrambled but it’s still 99% Newt and just 1% Precursor will behind it – which means all the fancy stuff is just what he saw as necessary for that goal (basically, to blend in at Shao and maaaybe to enjoy himself a little along the way?).
Because the alternative is 2) the Precursors wanted the fancy suits and shades and penthouse apartment, which is wild to think about. Like, the Alice tank is in a bedroom with no door on it, with access to the only visible bathroom in the apartment. Which means unless Newt covers Alice up when people are over, no one can come in that apartment except Newt. It’s not for anyone except the Precursors! Not even for appearances!
So that kinda leaves us with the inevitable question: are the Precursors a bunch of dandies on their planet?? It’s not totally inconceivable, I mean, they’re part of a sophisticated multi-planetary empire. They could very well have a concept of fashion and prestige, even if it’s technically within a hive mind? Like maybe “glorifying the whole” as a thing even if individuality isn’t?
Or they can only interact with our world through Newt’s subjective memories and some input from objective reality so like… this could be Newt’s vision of success in some way which they’re interpreting as “the right way” to go about being on Earth (and oh, honey, guys, seriously. Don’t go off Newt to know what’s normal on our planet!), but they still fed into it and had to have wanted it to some extent if they’re the ones piloting all the time? Which means the Precursors wanted all this stuff? Which is kinda nuts??
Hi!! I saw your newmann cosplay and i was wondering; what did you use to make the tattoos on your arms? (im also considering about cosplaying newt soon but i have no idea what to use) thanks !
Hey there! I was originally gonna do the popular cosplay tip of painting the designs onto see-through nylon to make cloth sleeves BUT I have ZERO artistic ability so the prospect was very intimidating.
Then I saw @alienfirst‘s sleeve recreations in this post: https://avelera.tumblr.com/post/176997827945/alienfirst-rough-color-refs-of-newts-tattoos and would like to formally nominate them for sainthood because when you print those designs onto standard temporary tattoo paper like this https://smile.amazon.com/Silhouette-MEDIA-TATTOO-Temporary-Tattoo-Paper/dp/B0043WJ3OA/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1534729896&sr=8-3&keywords=tattoo+paper and print it through a NORMAL color printer, they come out looking AMAZING and I HIGHLY recommend it because they just look and feel awesome and I’ve been leaving them on for the last couple of days and just feeling like a badass, A++ highly recommend.
I’m going to defeat you with the power of friendship and this gun I found
Weird question but did the Precursors just… already have the chains and things when Hermann rocked up? Did they have to scramble to organise them later? Love the AU to pieces, can’t wait to read more!!
They do not have them yet as of ch. 2. All of this will be answered soon in ch. 3 😉 I intend this fic to be pretty grounded in realism wherever possible so I promise there’s no oversights when it comes to logistics and resources in this scenario. It’s part of the fun :3
