Newt and Hermann don’t share an office when they get their joint university tenure, I’m here to lay down some facts

  • They have different offices in different buildings
  • with windows that face each other
  • This has given them both reason and opportunity to maintain at least two or three ongoing conversations
  • One through email, one through text, one through speaker phone on their office line
  • Sometimes newt will open his window and “DOCTOR GOTTLIEB! WHERE DO YOU WANT TO ORDER LUNCH? THEY DON’T DELIVER! CAN WE TRY THE NEW POLISH DELI PLACE? OKAY, TEXT ME WHAT YOU WANT!”
  • Sometimes hermann will sip tea, lean back to admire his finished work, reflect on how close they came to extinction, look across to newt’s windo OH MY GOD WHY IS NEWTON’S OFFICE ON FIRE
  • Newton keeps a pet octopus in his office that likes to escape its tank. Hermann occasionally shouts at it when it goes for the open window. Hermann occasionally texts Newt pictures. Hermann occasionally watches vindictively.
  • “DON’T YOU SLAM YOUR WINDOW AT ME, FIGHT ME, GOTTLIEB! HEY! HEY YOU! YEAH, BASKETBALL SHORTS IN SNOW, YOU! CATCH THIS NOTE AND TAKE IT TO DOCTOR GOTTLIEB’S OFFICE! I DON’T KNOW, I’LL GIVE YOU EXTRA CREDIT! SO DROP YOUR MAJOR, TAKE MY CLASS AND GET MY EXTRA CREDIT, YOU’RE BURNING DAYLIGHT!”
  • Sometimes when a coworker comes into his office, Hermann is Cornered Into Socializing. Newt will notice Hermann fidgeting from his window and “pop in” to save the day and intercept the small talk onslaught 
  • Newt sneaks into Hermann’s office and tries to pull pranks. Tries. Hermann is the younger-middle child of four siblings. Newt is an only child with limited childhood relationships with other kids. Hermann hasn’t fallen for any pranks, and lives for the /tangible/ self righteous moments when he can stroll in, casually lock his cabinet with a chair until Newt tries to come out of hiding. Tries.

What do you thinki it’d be like if it were the reverse and Newt came in to find Hermann seizing on the floor alone? (I imagine his reasoning would be he knew Newt was going to do it no matter what anyone said and was trying to protect him by doing it first)

Well I mean, off the top of my head, Hermann’s reaction is super dependent on him SEEING THIS COMING FROM MILES AWAY. To his credit, the man did everything he conceivably could in his own socially incompetent way to warn Newt off, everything short of actually telling Newt without the weird-ass emotional constipation, “I CARE ABOUT YOU, YOU ASSHOLE, AND I DON’T WANT  TO FIND YOU WITH YOUR BRAIN LEAKING OUT YOUR EARS ON THE FLOOR SOMEDAY BECAUSE YOU DID SOMETHING PREDICTABLY STUPID” when he denigrated his plan to Drift with the Kaiju brain so like, when he walked into that lab, heyooo, guess what he KNEW, HE JUST FUCKING KNEW had just happened?! He never doubted it COULD work he doubted that it SHOULD be something Newt attempted because it’s BATSHIT CRAZY STUPID.

*Ahem*

That said, Newt finding Hermann just… on the floor in the lab without that backstory would probably just lead to Newt freaking out that Hermann fell off the ladder or something and he’d be all, “I TOLD you that ladder was a fucking death trap but did you listen? Nooooo…” in an increasingly shrieky tone as he drags Hermann’s inert body across the Shatterdome to Stacker or just to med bay and shrieks at people and gets in the way and tries to treat Hermann himself until someone forcibly ejects him from the room. 

IF Hermann was planning something dangerous ala Newt Geiszler… IDK, Drifting with a math problem or something, maybe opening his own breach to see What Would Happen, I hesitate to say if there’s anything he could come up with that Newt would not be totally on board with and instead of being Wildly Enthusiastic. But IF somehow Hermann MANAGED to find an experiment dangerous enough for Newt to say, “Whoa, hold up, wait a minute,” in THEORY making rocket fuel out of Kaiju blood in a way that blows Hermann to kingdom come and isn’t just Totally Fucking Awesome from a Newt Geiszler perspective… yeah probably a lot of Point 2 with Newt screeching as he drags Hermann to medical but instead of just I Told You So-ing he’s also wildly complimenting Hermann on how Fucking Badass That Was.

Edit: whoops I totally misunderstood the second half of your Ask but HERE YA GO ANYWAY
