Of all the universes they could have had, this was theirs: A Newton Geiszler shaped thing trussed up in a cell, and Hermann Gottlieb desperate and unable to give up hope. . To save Newtonās life, Hermann is driven to tinker with the very handwriting of god.
the precursors: human why is destroying the world taking so long
newt, who got his fifth phd in stalling for time after passing multiple ohsa inspections: IDK MAN YOU TELL ME!!!!! MAYBE YOUāRE JUST DUMB HUH YOU EVER THINK OF THAT????
iām sorry but the idea of newt coming up with progressivly dumber and dumber excuses to why their plan isnāt working is just peak comedy to me
i debated how to fill this one for a while but i finally decided. heres some RIPPED hermann. and im assuming u mean this art!
Thereās a loud, persistent knocking at Newtās door.
Newtās confused for all of one secondāthe only person who would ever willingly and rarely) seek him out in his bunk is Hermann, but itās waypast when Hermann would still be working, Newt had almost been asleepāwhen Hermannās voice is callingĀ āNewton, open up immediately.āĀ
Which is just more confusing, but whatever.Ā āOne sec,ā Newt calls back, hopping out of bed, tugging his pajama bottoms up over his boxers, and switching on his bedside light. Hermannās knocking gets louder. Newt canāt imagine what he did to incur the wrath of Hermann this intensely. He shoves his glasses on his face as he fumbles with his lock. āJesus Christ, Hermann, I said one secondāā
He swings the door open.
Hermann stands there, soaking wet, pissed, and totally nude except for a towel wrapped around the lower half of his body.
I assume byĀ āthe storyā we mean Uprising? Yes and no. Side note, I had a film critic friend who was actually surprised it wasnāt Hermann because he thought that would have been more of a twist, and on some level I agree with him (though in other ways I donāt). But getting to the film.Ā
First, why, no, it wouldnāt have changed things:
– Newt and Hermannās skill sets had gotten so mixed in with one another that, for the purpose of the film, Herman was basically a blend of both Newt and Hermann, a one-man K-Sci lab, and in the personality divorce of their 3-way Drift, all Newt got was the Precursors ;P If it had been the other way around, I think Newt would have picked up some of Hermannās skills and the only difference would be itās Newt being the PPDCās somewhat eccentric tag-along nerd trope and Hermann being the corporate guy who doesnāt really want Newt touching him, Iām not sure much would have changed except weād be wondering why Newtās trying so hard to get this guy to like him back?
Basically, for their actual roles in the filmās plot, interchanging them wouldnāt have changed much because they were blended by their Drift. I totally believe Newt could have just as easily fulfilled the Kaiju Blood Rocket plotline, and would have picked up enough of Hermannās skills to figure out Hermannās version of the plan.
Yes it would have been different for a few reasons:
– Hermann is just, personality-wise, a far more stereotypical villain personality in the first film (and Burnās bon structure lends itself to villains, Charlie is just more friend-shaped in general). Heās stern, forbidding, and seems to hate fun. Also Hollywood has a big olā anti-intellectualism thing going on so smart = bad. Him becoming a corporate guy working for Liwen Shao wouldnāt have seemed odd at all. A difference would be that heās difficult for Liwen in other ways, perhaps just saying no to her a lot or being a perfectionist about the Jaegers, saying she canāt have the demonstration when she wants it. (Overall though, I think Liwen would have preferred Hermann even if it meant the destruction of her company and the world itself, because Newt is just a personality that annoys the shit out of her and she got stuck with him for ten years, lol.)Ā
The tragedy of Hermann being possessed would be thereās even lessĀ chance of someone noticing something is up. His brief flash of happiness after they Drifted would appear to be just that: a flash before his standoffish personality resumed.Ā
It also would have been much harder to convince the audience and everyone in the story that,Ā āIt wasnāt him!ā that this was something against Hermannās will I think, because heās so reserved about his emotions. The only strong argument is that heād never turn against the cause he fought for, but even Newt would have to admit that most of the time Hermann was a jerk to him and didnāt seem to like people very much. Would it be that hard to see him leap from there to destroying people?
– For āyes it would change thingsā, I donāt think his ploy would have been the same. I truly do believe the Precursors went into their hostās brain and said,Ā āOk, if YOU wanted to destroy the world, how would you do it?ā and Newtās answer was,Ā āDuh, take over some evil weapons manufacturer and turn their weapons against humanity. Iād do it with cloned Kaiju brains because thatās my skill set.ā
For Hermann, I think it would be opening breaches to let Kaiju back in sooner. Or heād find a way to make the Jaegers go bad without Kaiju brains, just with rogue programming. Hell, it it was me with his skill set, Iād just have the Jaegers of the world turn on each other and launch World War Three by making it look like nations were turning on one another, thenĀ let a bunch of Kaiju come pouring in after the dust settles.
Basically, Iām also not convinced humanity would do as well against Hermann going evil, or even win at all. I sort of have a suspicion that like⦠Newtās plan took 10 years because it was silly levels of elaborate on purpose because he was also stalling them as much as possible because he really, fundamentally doesnāt want to destroy the world. I also think his plan is like⦠kinda dumb and easy to defeat. His specialty as a biologist is just DUMB for destroying the world?Ā
But Hermann⦠Hermannās the robot guy. Hermannās the math guy. Hermannās theĀ ālearning to understand holes ripped in the fabric of time and spaceā. Iām not sure the good guys would have even had timeĀ to react when his plan went into motion. To quote Newt in TOWOID,Ā āNo whimper. Just a really loud bang.ā
Basically, the Precursors dun fucked up by taking Newt instead of Hermann, and weāre all lucky they did.
Stage 2 Red Newmann drift. Iām really enjoying this drawing style but now I must away to bed. Hopefully iāll get a chance to do something with this tomorrow. Iām hoping to do something really fun with the streams of consciousness.Ā
